Valterra Platinum is opening its 2026 Engineering Learnership Programme – a chance for unemployed South Africans to start a career in a skilled trade. Find out more about the opportunity here.
What the learnership is
The programme runs for 18 months and mixes classroom learning with hands‑on training at Valterra Platinum’s Rustenburg processing sites. It leads to a nationally recognised artisan qualification when you meet all the requirements.
Who can apply
You must be unemployed and meet one of the following education routes:
- Matric (or Technical Matric) – you need at least 40 % in Mathematics, Physical Science and English. Mathematical Literacy is NOT accepted.
- N2 qualification or higher – the subjects you studied must match the trade you choose (e.g., Fitting Trade Theory, Electrical Trade Theory, etc.).
- NCV Level 4 – a National Certificate Vocational in a related field, with at least 40 % in each subject.
Applicants from the host communities (Rustenburg, Bafokeng, etc.) are given first preference, but you must provide a stamped proof of residence.
No previous engineering work experience is required, but you must have the correct subjects for the trade you select.
What you will gain
- Practical training in one of six trades: Fitter, Boilermaker, Electrician, Rigger, Instrument Mechanician, or Millwright.
- A nationally recognised artisan qualification that enhances employability.
- Exposure to real‑world plant operations at Valterra’s Precious Metals Refinery, Base Metals Refinery, Converter Plant, and Waterval Smelters.
- Market‑aligned reward and recognition (exact stipend not disclosed).
How to apply – step by step
- Confirm which trade you want and that your qualification includes the required subjects.
- Gather the following documents:
- Updated CV
- Certified copies of your qualifications
- South African ID copy
- Proof of residence (stamp from municipality or tribal office) if you are from a host community
- Combine all documents into a single PDF – make sure every page is clear and readable.
- Visit the official recruitment portal: Apply for the Valterra Platinum Engineering Learnership.
- Complete the online form, select the exact trade, and upload your PDF.
- Review all entries carefully and submit. Applications are reviewed as they arrive.
Tips to improve your chances
- Double‑check that your subjects match the chosen trade; mismatched subjects lead to automatic rejection.
- Ensure you have at least 40 % in each required subject.
- Verify that the proof of residence is stamped and legible.
- Open the combined PDF on both a phone and a computer to confirm readability.
- Submit early – waiting until the deadline may mean your application is missed.
- Use the exact trade names listed (e.g., “Fitter – 5 positions”) to avoid confusion.
Next steps
If you meet the education criteria and are ready to start a hands‑on technical career, finish your documents now and apply before 30 September 2026. Remember, the earlier you submit, the better your chance of being considered.
