AFGRI Equipment is offering a tractor and earth‑moving apprenticeship that starts now and closes on 30 September 2026. This is a chance to earn a salary while learning a trade that is in high demand across South Africa.
What is the apprenticeship?
AFGRI will take on 40 apprentices for a three‑year programme. The first six months are a probation period. If you pass probation, you will sign a formal apprenticeship contract and work towards becoming a qualified Tractor Mechanic or Earth‑moving Mechanic.
Who can apply?
You must have a Grade 12 certificate with pass marks in English and either Mathematics or Technical Mathematics. A valid South African driver’s licence is also required.
Additional qualities that help you succeed include good communication, basic computer skills, attention to detail, teamwork, and a strong desire to finish the training.

- Physical Science
- Engineering Graphics and Design
- Diesel Trade Theory
- Motor Trade Theory
These subjects strengthen your application but do not replace the English‑and‑Math requirement.
What will you learn and earn?
The apprenticeship blends classroom study with hands‑on work in AFGRI’s workshops. You will work on tractors, earth‑moving machines, and related equipment used in agriculture, construction, forestry, golf and turf.
Key skills you will develop:
- Diagnosing simple mechanical faults
- Repairing and maintaining tractors or earth‑moving gear
- Using workshop tools safely
- Following technical and safety procedures
- Managing stock and paperwork
- Communicating with customers
- Collaborating with qualified mechanics
- Meeting workplace responsibilities and deadlines
The apprenticeship pays a market‑related salary throughout the training period.
Training and support
AFGRI works with two SETA bodies: the Agriculture SETA and the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services SETA. The appropriate authority depends on the trade you follow.
After probation you may attend a practical training institute, take distance‑learning subjects, join Saturday classes, receive product training from suppliers, and receive internal technical instruction from AFGRI specialists.
Training is free as long as you pass each subject and phase. If you fail, you must repeat the portion at your own expense.
Work‑back commitment
When you qualify, you must work for AFGRI for a period equal to the time you spent training. For example, three years of training requires three years of work‑back.
The whole apprenticeship cannot exceed four years. If you do not qualify within that time, the contract ends.
