Department of Transport 2026/2027 WIL Programme for N6 Students

If you have finished an N6 and still need workplace experience, the Department of Transport is recruiting 15 candidates for its 2026/2027 Work Integrated Learning Programme. Applications close on 9 October 2026. Many TVET students leave the Z83 until the last day, then miss the deadline because a form or attachment is incomplete.

What this Work Integrated Learning programme is

Work Integrated Learning lets you use what you studied inside a real workplace. This intake is built for relevant N6 qualifications. It is not the Department’s separate graduate internship advert for National Diplomas and degrees.

The programme runs for 18 months. There are 15 positions across six categories, based in different branches of the Department of Transport. The placements are associated with the Pretoria Head Office.

The 15 positions are split like this:

  • Administration – 4 positions, reference DOT/WIL/2026/1, Office of the Director-General
  • Human Resource Management and Development – 5 positions, reference DOT/WIL/2026/2
  • Legal Services – 1 position, reference DOT/WIL/2026/3, Corporate Legal Services
  • Financial Administration – 2 positions, reference DOT/WIL/2026/4, Chief Financial Officer branch
  • Administration in the Chief Financial Officer branch – 2 positions, reference DOT/WIL/2026/5
  • Maritime Transport Administrative Support – 1 position, reference DOT/WIL/2026/6

Each post has its own reference number and qualification list. Choose the post that matches your N6. Do not apply at random.

Who can apply

These posts are for candidates with a relevant N6 certificate who need practical training. If you have a National Diploma or a university degree, the Department’s graduate internship adverts may be the better match.

Applicants who have already taken part in an internship programme will be disqualified under the conditions in the advert. Give truthful information about previous programmes. Do not hide an earlier internship. Recruitment may check qualifications, previous experience, citizenship, references and security information.

Match your N6 to the correct reference:

  • DOT/WIL/2026/1, Administration: Office Administration, Public Management, Administration, Public Administration or Business Management
  • DOT/WIL/2026/2, Human Resource Management and Development: Human Resource Management or Personnel Management
  • DOT/WIL/2026/3, Legal Services: Legal Services or Legal Practice
  • DOT/WIL/2026/4, Financial Administration: Financial Administration or Financial Management
  • DOT/WIL/2026/5, Administration: Financial Administration or Financial Management
  • DOT/WIL/2026/6, Maritime Transport Administrative Support: Public Management, Public Administration or Business Management

DOT/WIL/2026/5 is titled Administration, but it still needs N6 Financial Administration or N6 Financial Management. Do not choose it only because the title says Administration.

Only one Legal Services post and one Maritime post are advertised. A complete application with the correct reference still does not guarantee a place. Competition is real.

You also need to be able to take part for the full 18 months in Pretoria. Think about daily transport, accommodation if you must relocate, commuting time, monthly travel costs and whether your transport is reliable.

What you can gain

The advertised stipend is R6,131 per month for 18 months. The advert does not say that accommodation, transport or meal allowances are included. Do not treat the stipend as extra spending money until you know your living costs. Do not assume extra costs are covered unless the Department says so during selection.

Eighteen months is long enough to do more than watch an office work. Depending on the branch, you may build skills in professional communication, record keeping, administration, time management, public-sector procedures, teamwork, office systems, document management and workplace professionalism.

Human resource posts can expose you to professional HR processes in government. Financial posts can expose you to the administrative side of public-sector finance. The maritime post can give administrative exposure linked to South Africa’s transport environment. Exact duties depend on the branch.

Keep notes on what you learn. Those notes can strengthen a later curriculum vitae. Limited formal work experience does not make your application worthless. Your N6 is one of the most important parts.

How to apply

Submit the new Z83 application form with a comprehensive curriculum vitae. State the position title and the correct reference number clearly. Small errors on a government form can cause problems, so complete it slowly. Follow the current advert. Do not rely on older application rules.

The general instruction is to send the completed new Z83 and your curriculum vitae. Do not add or leave out documents based on guesses. If the Department later asks for more documents, send them within the time given.

You can apply for more than one post only if you qualify for each one. Send a separate Z83 and curriculum vitae for each post. Do not put several reference numbers on one form. If you qualify for both DOT/WIL/2026/1 and DOT/WIL/2026/6, prepare two applications. Each one needs the correct title, reference number, Z83 and curriculum vitae.

There are three ways to submit, as listed for this intake. Email is one option. Use a clear subject line with the programme and reference number, for example: WIL Administration – DOT/WIL/2026/1. You can also post to Department of Transport, Private Bag X193, Pretoria, 0001. You can hand deliver to Department of Transport, 159 Forum Building, Corner Struben and Bosman Street, Pretoria.

Before you email, confirm that the Z83 is complete, the reference number is correct, the curriculum vitae is attached, the subject line is clear, your cellphone number is correct, your email address is active, your N6 is clearly listed, the files open, and the information is true. A common mistake is sending the email with no attachments. Open it once more before you send.

Post early. Do not post on 9 October 2026 and assume it will arrive that day. Keep proof of postage or courier. If you hand deliver, do not arrive at the last moment.

Correspondence is limited to shortlisted candidates. If you have not been contacted within six months after the closing date, treat the application as unsuccessful. Check your cellphone, missed calls, inbox and spam folder. Do not change your contact details unless you can still receive recruitment messages.

Tips to improve your chances

Many applicants struggle because they use one reference number for every post. First match the title and subjects on your N6 certificate to the advertised field. A targeted application is more useful than sending all six references when you do not qualify.

On your curriculum vitae, include your full name, an active cellphone number, an active email address, residential information, your N6 qualification, your TVET college, subjects completed, other relevant certificates, previous experience where you have it, computer skills and relevant practical abilities. State the exact qualification clearly.

No one should promise selection in exchange for money. Be careful if someone asks for an application fee, placement payment, recruitment fee, money to move your application, banking passwords or one-time PINs. Use the stated government channels. A real application depends on eligibility and the recruitment process, not payment to a person.

What to do next

This intake can suit you if you have a relevant N6, studied at a TVET college, have not already been on an internship programme, can commit for 18 months, and can realistically work in Pretoria.

Your next step is simple. Match your certificate to the right reference, complete a new Z83, update your curriculum vitae, and submit a separate application for each post you truly qualify for. Do this before 9 October 2026. A careful application gives you a fair chance to be considered. It does not promise a place.
