Finishing your N6 without work experience can feel frustrating. You studied hard, but every job advert asks for experience you do not have yet. Right now, there is a real chance to change that. The KZN Social Development Work Integrated Learning Programme 2026/2027 is open for applications, with 36 paid placements for TVET College graduates. The closing date is 19 October 2026, so you still have time to prepare a strong application.
What Is This Opportunity?
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development, working with the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA), is offering an 18-month work placement. You will work in a real government office and gain the experience your N6 needs to become a full qualification.
Here are the key facts:
- Recruiting department: KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development
- Training partner: HWSETA
- Placements: 36 in total
- Duration: 18 months
- Monthly stipend: R4,000
- Locations: Pietermaritzburg and district offices across KwaZulu-Natal
- Closing date: 19 October 2026
Who Can Apply?
You qualify if you meet all of these conditions:
- You are an unemployed TVET College student.
- You have completed your N6 in one of the four fields listed below.
- You live in KwaZulu-Natal.
- You have never done a WIL programme with national, provincial or local government before.
- You are computer literate.
- You are willing to relocate to your allocated office at your own cost.
Shortlisted candidates will also go through a structured interview.
Accepted N6 Fields and Reference Numbers
Each field has nine placements. Choose the one that matches your completed N6 and quote the correct reference number:
- Public Management: PM/WIL/01/2026/27
- Management Assistant: MA/WIL/02/2026/27
- Financial Management: FM/WIL/03/2026/27
- Human Resource Management: HRM/WIL/04/2026/27
What You Will Gain
This programme gives you real workplace experience inside a government department. That experience helps you complete your N6 qualification and makes your CV stronger for future jobs. You will also earn a R4,000 monthly stipend while you learn, and build practical skills in administration, communication and office procedures.
One honest note: the advert does not promise a permanent job at the end. Treat this as experience and a stepping stone, not a job guarantee.
Documents You Must Submit
Many applicants lose out because of missing documents. Check this list twice before you apply:
- A fully completed Z83 application form.
- A detailed CV with your contact number and your physical and postal addresses.
- A copy of your South African ID.
- Your N6 certificate. The advert clearly states that a statement of results is not accepted.
- Proof of residence.
- A letter from your college confirming that you still need workplace-integrated learning.
- An affidavit confirming you have never taken part in a government WIL programme.
You must also name your preferred placement area and the relevant business unit. Make sure your reference number matches your chosen field.
Where Are the Placements?
Positions are split between the head office in Pietermaritzburg and district offices. The districts include uMgungundlovu, Harry Gwala, eThekwini North, eThekwini South, iLembe, uMkhanyakude, King Cetshwayo, uMzinyathi, uThukela and Amajuba.
Check the placement table in the official advert before you choose your area. Remember, you cover your own relocation costs.

Tips to Improve Your Chances
There are only 36 placements, and many students will apply. These small steps can help your application stand out:
- Use the correct reference number for your N6 field. The wrong code can get you disqualified.
- Attach your N6 certificate, not your statement of results.
- Complete every section of your Z83 form neatly and clearly.
- Get your affidavit and college letter early. These can take time to arrange.
- Apply well before the closing date. Late and faxed applications will not be accepted.
- Keep proof of submission, especially if you post your documents.
Closing Date and Final Checks
Applications close on 19 October 2026. Before you submit, double-check your reference number, your chosen placement area and every document on the list. If anything is unclear, call the enquiry numbers above instead of guessing.
If you have finished your N6 and you live in KwaZulu-Natal, do not let this pass you by. Experience is often the hardest part of starting a career, and this programme offers a paid, structured way to get it. Gather your documents this week, choose your field, and submit early. You have worked hard for your qualification. This is your chance to put it to use.
