Thandeka 2026 Clothing & Textile Learnerships – NQF Levels 1-2

Looking for a practical entry into South Africa’s clothing and textile industry? Thandeka Learnerships now offer 12‑month programmes that give you workplace experience and a recognised NQF qualification.

What the opportunity is

Thandeka Vocational Education Trust runs two learnership pathways in clothing, textile, footwear and leather manufacturing. Each pathway lasts 12 months, is worth 120 NQF credits and leads to a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 1 or Level 2 certificate.

Who can apply (eligibility)

  • Level 1 pathway – No Matric required. You need basic communication and numeracy skills roughly equivalent to Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) Level 3 (about Grade 7). Higher English or Maths may be recognised.
  • Level 2 pathway – Requires a NQF Level 1 qualification or ABET Level 4 (about Grade 9). This is for learners who already have some basic education.
  • Unemployed learners may qualify for an allowance during training (amount not yet published).
  • Employed learners can also join, but allowance details may differ.

What you gain (benefits and skills)

Both programmes combine on‑the‑job training with classroom learning. You will develop:

  • Understanding of the clothing production cycle
  • Cutting, sewing and garment finishing techniques
  • Product inspection and quality standards
  • Workplace communication and basic entrepreneurship
  • Personal finance and supply‑and‑demand concepts

The Level 2 route adds more specialised skills such as industrial sewing machine operation, pattern work and advanced quality requirements.

How to apply (step‑by‑step)

  1. Visit the official Thandeka learner application form and click “Apply”.
  2. Fill in your personal details: full name, email, mobile number, date of birth and province.
  3. Select the type of programme (learnership) and choose either the Level 1 or Level 2 clothing manufacturing pathway.
  4. Upload any requested documents (ID, qualification certificates, CV) only when the form asks for them.
  5. Double‑check your contact information before submitting.
  6. Wait for confirmation. Thandeka will contact you with the training location and intake details.

Tips to improve your chances

  • verify your NQF level before you start the application – matching the right pathway avoids rejection.
  • Ensure your ABET or NQF certificates are clear and legible; blurry scans can delay processing.
  • Write a concise CV that highlights any previous work or volunteer experience related to textiles, sewing or customer service.
  • Keep an eye on your email and phone for any follow‑up requests from Thandeka.
  • If you are unemployed, be ready to discuss your allowance needs, but do not rely on a fixed monthly figure until it is confirmed.

Additional note – Sewing Machine Mechanics

Thandeka also offers a separate four‑month, NQF Level 3 Skills Programme (48 credits) in Sewing Machine Mechanics. This course focuses on repairing industrial machines and is not part of the 12‑month learnerships.

Where the training takes place

Training locations vary. You may study at a Thandeka facility, at a partner workplace, or via blended learning, depending on the intake. Confirm the exact site before arranging travel or accommodation.

Application deadline

There is no single closing date. Intake depends on project funding and employer participation. It is safest to submit your application as soon as possible while the form is online.
