What the qualification is
The Higher Certificate in Education is a one‑year, 120‑credit programme at NQF Level 5. It is offered in three streams:
- Foundation Phase & Intermediate Phase (FIP)
- Senior Phase & Further Education & Training (SPF)
- Senior Phase Maths & Science (SMS)
It builds academic, language, information‑management and basic teaching skills through UNISA’s open distance‑learning system.
Who can apply
You may apply if you meet the following:
- South African school qualification (Matric) or equivalent.
- Admission Points Score (APS) of at least 18 for the chosen stream.
- Valid South African ID (or passport for international applicants).
Meeting the APS does not guarantee a place in a Bachelor of Education (BEd) later; you will still need to apply for the BEd programme and compete for available slots.

How to apply – step by step

- Gather your documents. You will need a clear copy of your Matric certificate, any tertiary record if you have one, and a scanned ID or passport.
- Start the online application. Go to UNISA’s undergraduate application portal, select the Higher Certificate in Education, and upload the required files.
- Pay the application fee. The fee is R160 (non‑refundable). Use the student number you receive and the fee reference when you pay.
- Submit before the deadline. Applications for the 2027 year close on 9 October 2026. The window opened on 17 August 2026.
- Wait for the outcome. UNISA will assess your application against the APS, document completeness and space availability. An offer will be sent by email.
