What You Will Train To Become
This is a structured technical programme that prepares you for a trade qualification. You will train as either a Tractor Mechanic or an Earthmoving Mechanic.
The programme runs for three full years. The first six months serve as probation. During this time, you and AFGRI will decide if the fit is right. After that, you sign a formal contract and begin serious training.
Your training will include practical workshop work, formal college subjects, distance learning, and product training from suppliers. The programme is registered with either AgriSETA or MerSETA, depending on your route. Both you and AFGRI will be contracted to the relevant SETA.
Who Can Apply
You must have a valid South African driver’s license. You also need Grade 12 with specific subjects.
The strict requirements are:
- English – passed
- Mathematics OR Technical Mathematics – passed
- Mathematical Literacy is NOT accepted
These subjects are not compulsory but will help your application:
- Engineering, Technical or Physical Science
- Engineering Graphics and Design
- Diesel Trade Theory
- Motor Trade Theory
If you have these technical subjects, make them stand out on your CV. They show you already understand basic workshop concepts.
You also need good communication skills, basic computer literacy, and admin ability. This is not just about fixing machines. You will handle stock control and customer service too.
