AFGRI Equipment 2026 Apprenticeships: Requirements and How to Apply

Time is running out to secure one of only 40 spots in the AFGRI Equipment Apprenticeships. If you passed Grade 12 with Mathematics and you enjoy working with your hands, this three-year programme could turn you into a qualified Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic. Applications close on 30 September 2026.

This is a real opportunity to enter the technical repair industry without paying for training. Many young South Africans struggle to find work because they lack practical experience. This apprenticeship solves that problem by giving you workplace exposure from day one.

What You Will Train To Become

This is a structured technical programme that prepares you for a trade qualification. You will train as either a Tractor Mechanic or an Earthmoving Mechanic.

The programme runs for three full years. The first six months serve as probation. During this time, you and AFGRI will decide if the fit is right. After that, you sign a formal contract and begin serious training.

Your training will include practical workshop work, formal college subjects, distance learning, and product training from suppliers. The programme is registered with either AgriSETA or MerSETA, depending on your route. Both you and AFGRI will be contracted to the relevant SETA.

Who Can Apply

You must have a valid South African driver’s license. You also need Grade 12 with specific subjects.

The strict requirements are:

  • English – passed
  • Mathematics OR Technical Mathematics – passed
  • Mathematical Literacy is NOT accepted

These subjects are not compulsory but will help your application:

  • Engineering, Technical or Physical Science
  • Engineering Graphics and Design
  • Diesel Trade Theory
  • Motor Trade Theory

If you have these technical subjects, make them stand out on your CV. They show you already understand basic workshop concepts.

You also need good communication skills, basic computer literacy, and admin ability. This is not just about fixing machines. You will handle stock control and customer service too.

What You Gain From This Programme

The training is free of charge if you pass your subjects and phases. You will work in real workshops repairing and maintaining agricultural, construction, forestry, golf and turf equipment.

You will learn from AFGRI specialists and equipment suppliers. This gives you industry connections that many job seekers lack. You also develop discipline, teamwork, and deadline management.

However, be aware of the commitment. If you fail any subject, you must repeat it at your own cost and in your own time. The total contract cannot exceed four years.

If you leave during the apprenticeship or the work-back period, you must repay your training costs. The work-back period equals the time it took you to qualify.

How to Apply Step-by-Step

  4. Check that your personal details, school subjects, and driver’s license information are correct.

Tips to Improve Your Chances

Many applicants rush and make mistakes. Take your time.

Prepare these documents before you open the online form:

  • Your CV
  • Certified copy of your driver’s license
  • Certified Grade 12 results
  • Any technical subject certificates

Highlight Mathematics or Technical Mathematics clearly on your CV. If you passed trade-related subjects like Diesel Trade Theory, put them at the top of your qualifications list.

Do not wait until the last week of September. Online systems slow down when thousands of people apply at once. Submit early to avoid technical problems.

Answer the screening questions honestly. AFGRI is looking for motivated, detail-oriented people who work well in teams. Show them you are serious about completing the full three years.

Your Next Move

This apprenticeship gives you a recognised trade qualification without study debt. You earn while you learn, and you leave with three years of work experience on your CV.

The competition will be tough. Many young people across South Africa want these 40 positions. But if you have Grade 12 with Mathematics, a driver’s license, and a genuine interest in machinery repair, you have a real shot.

Check your documents today. Open the application portal tomorrow. Submit your application well before 30 September 2026.

Your technical career starts with this single step.
