NRCS Internships 2027–2029: R8,300 Stipend, How to Apply

Twenty-four paid internship positions are open right now at the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS), and each one pays a stipend of R8,300. If you have completed a diploma or degree in engineering, physics, food technology, chemistry or environmental science, this is a rare chance to build real workplace experience with a national regulator. The five streams cover different qualifications and different cities, so you must match your certificate to the correct reference before you apply. Full details of these NRCS internships are set out below, together with the official application link.

One warning before we start: legitimate jobs, bursaries and learnerships never charge application, registration or placement fees. If anyone asks you to pay to secure this internship, it is a scam. Use only the official application link in this article.

What this opportunity is about

The NRCS is the government body that checks that products sold in South Africa meet safety and quality standards. Through this programme it is hiring 24 interns across five technical units: Electrotechnical, Automotive, Legal Metrology, Food and Associated Industries (FAI), and Chemicals, Materials and Mechanicals (CMM).

Each intern works under a qualified manager, earns R8,300 per month and gains hands-on experience in the 2027–2029 cycle. These are contract appointments, so treat the programme as training and experience, not a permanent job offer.

Who can apply: match your qualification to a stream

Many graduates make one big mistake here: they assume any science or engineering qualification fits every stream. It does not. Mechatronics is listed under Automotive only, while Physics is listed under Legal Metrology only. Check your exact qualification below before choosing a reference.

1. Electrotechnical – 8 posts

You need a National Diploma, BSc or BEng in Electrical Engineering, or another related Electrical Engineering qualification. Interns report to the Manager: Electro-technical and earn R8,300 per month.

  • Pretoria – 4 posts – reference Elec-PTA/2027-2029
  • Cape Town – 1 post – reference Elec-CPT/2027-2029
  • Durban – 2 posts – reference Elec-DBN/2027-2029
  • Port Elizabeth – 1 post – reference Elec-PE/2027-2029

2. Automotive – 4 posts

You need a National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering. All four positions are in Pretoria, under reference Auto-PTA/2027-2029. Interns report to the Manager: Automotive and earn R8,300 per month.

3. Legal Metrology – 4 posts

You need a National Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering, a National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a Bachelor of Science in Physics. Interns report to the Manager: Legal Metrology and earn R8,300 per month.

  • Pretoria – 2 posts – reference LM-PTA/2027-2029
  • Cape Town – 2 posts – reference LM-CPT/2027-2029

4. Food and Associated Industries (FAI) – 4 posts

You need a National Diploma in Food Technology or another relevant Food Sciences qualification. Interns report to the Manager: Food and Associated Industries and earn R8,300 per month.

  • Pretoria – 1 post – reference FAI-PTA/2027-2029
  • Cape Town – 2 posts – reference FAI-CPT/2027-2029
  • Port Elizabeth – 1 post – reference FAI-PE/2027-2029

5. Chemicals, Materials and Mechanicals (CMM) – 4 posts

You need one of the following: a National Diploma or Degree in Chemical Engineering, a National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, a National Diploma or BSc in Analytical Chemistry, or a National Diploma or Degree in Environmental Science. All four positions are in Pretoria, under reference CMM-PTA/2027-2029. Interns report to the Manager: Chemicals, Materials and Mechanicals and earn R8,300 per month.

Which office can you realistically work at?

The 24 posts are spread like this: 15 in Pretoria, five in Cape Town, two in Durban and two in Port Elizabeth. On the application portal, Cape Town opportunities appear under Montague Gardens in the location filters, so do not skip it when you search.

You must be willing and able to work at the office attached to your position. Durban has only Electrotechnical posts in this round, while Automotive and CMM are based in Pretoria only. Accommodation and relocation support are not mentioned, so work out whether the city is practical for you before you select a reference.

Employment equity preferences and checks

NRCS gives preference to certain candidates to meet its employment-equity targets. People with disabilities are included across all five streams.

  • Electrotechnical (all four offices): African, Indian or Coloured women; people with disabilities
  • Automotive (Pretoria): African, Indian or Coloured women; people with disabilities
  • Legal Metrology (Pretoria and Cape Town): African, Indian or Coloured women and men; people with disabilities
  • FAI (Pretoria and Cape Town): African, Indian or Coloured men; people with disabilities
  • FAI (Port Elizabeth): African, Indian or Coloured women and men; people with disabilities
  • CMM (Pretoria): African, Indian or Coloured women and men; people with disabilities

These are stated preferences, not a replacement for the qualification criteria. Suitably qualified candidates will undergo employment and criminal record checks.

What you gain from this internship

You receive an R8,300 monthly stipend for the duration of the 2027–2029 cycle, plus supervised experience inside a national regulator. You will work on real compliance and testing tasks in your field, learn under a registered manager, and build a work record that strengthens future applications.

Many graduates struggle to land their first technical job because employers want experience they do not yet have. A structured internship like this helps you close that gap. Just remember: it is a contract post, and permanent placement afterwards is not guaranteed.

Documents and details to prepare before you apply

Many applicants lose out here because they prepare only their diploma or degree. The form also requires your Matric certificate, and that upload is easy to miss. Have clear copies of the following ready:

  • CV – required
  • Matric certificate – required
  • Qualification document – required
  • ID copy – optional upload
  • Additional documents – optional upload

The maximum size is 4 MB for each upload field. Check that every page of every file is readable before you upload it.

You will also need your personal and contact details, ID, passport or visa number, date of birth, citizenship and nationality information, home language, gender, ethnicity and disability information.

The form asks about your Grade 12 or NQF Level 4 results, your highest qualification, your current employment status, any previous internship and its field, and any criminal record. Previous-internship duration is an optional question. Answer everything accurately; a question about past internships does not itself decide eligibility, but false answers can.

How to apply through the NRCS portal, step by step

  1. Choose your stream and office. Compare your completed qualification with the list above and write down the correct reference number.
  2. Open the official NRCS careers portal. Go to the official NRCS internship listings and expand the relevant city. Select Montague Gardens for Cape Town opportunities.
  3. Read the position details. Use “Read More” to confirm the role, location and reference, then select “Apply”.
  4. Complete the application fields. Check that the position and reference shown at the top of the form match your choice before entering your information.
  5. Upload your documents. Keep each file within 4 MB and make sure all pages are readable. Complete every field marked with an asterisk, including the Matric certificate.
  6. Review the privacy and application terms. Read the consent statements and respond before continuing with “Next”.
  7. Finish and keep your confirmation. Review your answers and save any confirmation the portal supplies. Uploading documents alone does not complete your application, so follow every step to the end.

Can you apply with Matric or an N6 certificate only?

No. Matric alone does not meet the listed technical qualifications. The Matric certificate upload is an additional requirement on top of the diploma or degree needed for your stream.

An N6 certificate is not expressly listed as an accepted qualification. Do not treat it as interchangeable with a completed National Diploma unless NRCS confirms it.

There is also no published age limit, no detailed training curriculum, and no promise of a permanent job afterwards. These posts are contract appointments, so do not plan around automatic permanent employment.

Tips to improve your chances

  • Apply under the correct reference. This is the most common mistake in multi-stream applications. Double-check the code before you submit.
  • Be honest about the location. If you cannot live in or travel to that city, the application will not help you. Pretoria holds 15 of the 24 posts, so check that option first if you qualify.
  • Shape your CV around the stream. Use the modules, projects and practical work you actually completed to show how your studies match the role.
  • Compress your files under 4 MB. Open each document after compressing to confirm nothing is cut off or blurry.
  • Answer screening questions truthfully. Honesty protects you during the employment and criminal checks.
  • Confirm the closing date. No deadline has been announced, so check with NRCS before relying on any date or making relocation plans.

Take your next step today

Twenty-four posts may sound like plenty, but opportunities like these attract applications from graduates across the country, so give yourself the best possible chance. Choose the stream that matches your qualification, confirm you can work at that office, and prepare your CV, Matric certificate and qualification document now. Then apply through the official portal while the positions are still open. If you are exploring other regulator-based options, you can also compare these with the separate NERSA internships and learnerships. Prepare carefully, apply correctly, and take that first step towards your technical career.
